Writing More

Do you guys have any tricks to get yourselves to write more? My main problems are 1) laziness, and 2) on the same computer I use to write lives a computer game I have been addicted to for 2 years.

Maybe somebody less lazy than me should organize a writing club?

NBS - I've always admired your productivity. What's your secret?

Another super-producer is CKJ. He can't respond though, because his productivity secret is not knowing how to use the internet.

I heard Larry McMurtry talk once, and he said he wakes up every day and starts writing immediately. When he gets to three pages - even if it's mid-sentence - he stops. Usually this is before breakfast, and then he takes a walk and asses around all day. He suggested the key is actually not writing too much per day, or you'll get exhausted, and writing every single day.

I created a user account on my computer that disables Firefox, iTunes, and all of my games. I don't use it enough, but when I do, look out, boy!

A lot of Internet people swear by Writeroom as essential software for writing productivity. It actually is pretty effective.

Larry McMurtry's advice is shared by a bunch of people like Anthony Burgess and so forth, so it's probably sound.

This article is pretty basic and short, but I still found it worth reading. It reiterates writing in the morning and using WriteRoom.

Also, drink coffee. Also, I won't explicitly endorse smoking cigarettes because it's bad for you, but Stephen King does in On Writing. He denounces alcohol and cocaine, but he says that smoking is awesome.

Anyways, if you actually have the discipline to switch your computer over to a writing only user account for a few hour, it does work.
